Lincoln
2337

We visited the Lincoln Memorial for almost two hours. It was a full supply of photographic opportunity as well as a rich symbol of American heritage. A tribute to our nation's sixteenth President who, with God's guidance, led the country through it's darkest hour of civil war. He was the executive driving force behind the abolition of slavery, which was finalized when congress passed, with Lincoln's strong support, the thirteenth amendment.

The Tree House In The Mighty Oak

A True Parable

There once was a wealthy Father who built, for his adopted children, a beautiful and spacious tree house, in a great and mighty oak tree. The Father spared no expense for his children; there was never a tree house so fair. For many years his children enjoyed savory treats and tea together in their beloved tree house. They were thankful and they knew their father well and understood his ways. They lived in their Father's care and obeyed the rules of his house. When certain strangers, who knew not the Father's ways, learned of the savory treats and the goodness of the tree house they came and demanded their portion as well. Imposing themselves upon the Father's children, they came in straightway. They ate all of the treats, drank all the tea, and broke the dishes. When they saw that there was nothing more to be had they said to one another, "of what value is this tree house anyway?" Then they rose up and cut down the oak tree.

The architectural details within the memorial are incredible, particularly in the ceiling.

DXO 7 really did the math with this file. It really crunched the numbers to wring out every bit of visible lens distortion caused by this wide angle field of view. It also ate up the chroma noise, in the lightened shadow areas in these columns, caused by a fairly high ISO setting. This is one of my favorite images in this collection.

The rich chocolate brown paneled ceiling with olive branch and oak leaf scroll is spectacular.

Loading The Rolleiflex

It is amazing what DXO does with images made with fish eye lenses. Mark took this shot of me loading my Rolleiflex with a fresh roll of black and white film (I took advantage of the subdued light behind one of the massive marble columns). Mark made this exposure with a Nikkor 10.5mm fish eye lens mounted on his D7000. DXO Math took this super distorted fish eye view and straightened it out to look more like an ultra wide lens. As you mouse over back and forth, notice how it straightened out the lines in the columns and the marble floor. Using DXO in your post processing turns a fish eye lens into a much more usable ultra wide lens that can yield some creative wide angle perspectives. Thanks for this shot Mark!

This enormous 170 ton statue of Abraham Lincoln was conceived, and sculpted by Daniel Chester French and then carved out of 28 blocks of Georgia marble by Attilio and Furio Piccirilli. It was unveiled at the Memorial's dedication on May 30th 1922. The figure is 19 feet tall and stands a total of 30 feet above the floor. It is a masterful piece of art and the centerpiece of the memorial.

Rendered in both color or in black and white Mr. Lincoln's likeness makes for a stunning image.
