On the high resolution file you can read the inscriptions on these grave stones. Tangier Island residents have a heritage of Christian faith (Methodist) demonstrated by such inscriptions as: "Christ is my hope," "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints," "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord," " Amazing Grace," "I know that my redeemer liveth," "There is a land that is fairer than day," and my favorite, in the distant top left corner, "Resting in hope of a glorious resurrection." I am reminded of an old painting I saw recently of Christ reaching down and taking Adam and Eve by their wrists and pulling them up out of their graves. What a vast host of faithful souls that will be suddenly raised again to life when Christ appears.
